North Devon Festival

Now in its thirteenth year, the North Devon Festival proudly celebrates North Devon’s beauty as well as its rich cultural life. It continues to champion the very best of local talent alongside worldwide stars of stage and screen in hundreds of individual events.

Spanning the entire 30 days of June, this year’s Festival includes dance, sport, theatre, comedy, visual art, fairs, exhibitions and an awesome array of live music in venues large, small and downright unconventional!!

Acts and stars of various events throughout the festival this year include: The Shaolin Warriors, Seth Lakeman, Blake, Blazing Fiddles, Tony Christie, Norman Beaker, Gordon Giltrap and the Philharmonia Orchestra. We’re also particularly looking forward to jiving in the aisles at the Queen’s Theatre as Buddy, the world’s most successful Rock ‘n’ Roll musical ever, arrives direct from the West End.

As a major Festival event, The Barnstaple Fringe is back and undoubtedly one for the adventurous entertainment seeker, featuring unconventional performances in and around the various pubs and cafes of the town from purveyors of jazz, folk, performance poetry, electro, country, Americana and soul. It also encompasses the wonderfully diverse Fringe Theatrefest that continues to grow year on year.

North Devon Festival unveils line-up.

The exciting and diverse North Devon Festival has just released it’s 2011 line-up. Now in its thirteenth year, the Festival proudly celebrates the beauty of North Devon as well as its rich cultural life and whilst focussing around the two theatres in Ilfracombe and Barnstaple, includes activities across the whole of the region. It  continues to champion the very best of local talent alongside worldwide stars of stage and screen in hundreds of individual events.

The programme’s is so full that its still being finalised, but we know the already iconic AONB Coastal Marathon and Half Marathon at Woolacombe is back on this year. Now, where did I leave my trainers?

Hartland Abbey blooming beautiful.

We visited Hartland Abbey for the beautiful Daffodil Sunday last week. They have a wonderful collection of historic daffodils, many planted 150 years ago.  The wild flower days at the stunning Abbey have now become established as really good fun days out for everyone including dogs, of which there were hundreds (with their owners!).

Parts of the estate which are normally closed to the public were open and we went on a lovely walk to Blackpool Mill, which starred as ‘Barton Cottage’ in the BBC adaptation of ‘Sense and Sensibility’.

Hartland  really is a mystical part of North Devon, rich with myths of pirates and wreckers, but on a gorgeous day like Sunday we could only think of holidays, sunshine and the coming summer.

Amazing sunset.

Was walking the dog by Ilfracombe harbour the other evening and what an amazing sunset.  I know I may have seen many before but this was truly breathtaking.  Just a real pity I didn’t have my camera to capture this fabulous sight.
