Devon Holiday Activities
Villages and Locations in Devon
A region full of contrasts and drama, Devon's status as a holiday hotspot is sealed by the beautiful countryside which provides an ever-changing backdrop for a holiday that's as busy or laid-back as you'd like it to be.
Chocolate box villages and picture-postcard cottages nestle amid rolling landscapes where giant hedges line narrow lanes and the skyline is puntuated only by an occassional church tower or copse of ancient trees. Cattle and sheep graze just as they have done for years, casting a lazy eye on walkers and photographers, while the air is heavy with the scent of warm grass and honeysuckle. In the evenings, a great cloak of mist envelopes all, creating an air of mystery and splendid isolation... here, in the countryside, you'll find the perfect Devon cottage hideaway.
Woolacombe
With three miles of golden sands and great waves rolling in off the Atlantic, Woolacombe beach is one of the finest in the South West, and without a doubt the biggest attraction for the thousands of people who have a Devon holiday here each summer.
Away from the seashore, guests of our Woolacombe cottages can enjoy this lively family resort, once little more than a fishing hamlet, its fame grew in the 19th century when sea bathing became popular and local landowning families decided to create a new resort. Much of the elegant Regency holiday accommodation they built still survives, and is today interspersed with a great selection of pubs, restaurants and shops. Book a Woolacombe holiday cottage and enjoy all this region has to offer.
Putsborough
Putsborough perfectly encapsulates all that's best about the 'golden coast' of North Devon - the vast golden sands and rock pools here are perfect for family fun, while the village centre is just a short walk away.
Saunton
Saunton has a breathtaking three-mile expanse of flat beach overshadowed only by its backdrop, the thousand hectares of dunes know as Braunton Burrows. These form one of the largest sand dunes systems in the UK, considered so important it has been declared Britain's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.
Croyde
One of the prettiest villages in the South West, Croyde dates back to pre-Saxon times. Set within North Devon's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the sheltered sandy beach here is fantastic for bucket and spade-style fun, while surfers ride the famous breakers out in Croyde Bay all year round.
Ilfracombe
Whitewashed houses, grand Victorian villas and traditional terraces typify Ilfracombe's genteel elegance, but this is a resort with a contempoary edge too, offering a fince choice of restaurants and galleries, an iconic theatre and busy nightlife.
Lynton
Perched high on a coastline steeped in stories of smugglers and pirates, our cottages in Lynton sit at the northern edge of Exmoor in a region famed for its incomparable beauty. Bracken clad combes nestle between heather topped hills and spectacular cliffs, while rivers and tumbling waterfalls wind their way through wooded valleys to the sea - it is easy to see why the Victorians nicknamed this area 'Little Switzerland'!
Today Lynton is a bright and airy village with a good selection of shops, tearooms and cafes while just a mile away is another world - the remarkable Valley of the Rocks, a spectacular landscape created during the Ice Age. Book a Lynton cottage and enjoy this magical part of North Devon.
