VisitEngland Welcome Schemes for Self-Catering Accommodation

The 4 UK-wide welcome schemes below offer extra confidence for guests that are looking for particular requirements, specific to their needs.  They are in addition to the main VisitEngland grading and each property is checked once a year to ensure ALL the requirements are in place.

Simple common criteria for the each scheme have been introduced along with several activity specific requirements as detailed below.

WALKERS WELCOME

Developed with expert advice and support for the Countryside Agency and the Youth Hostel Association, this scheme is designed to give walkers the confidence that they are booking quality accommodation that meets their needs.

Specific requirements
  1. A separate space available for drying outdoor clothing and footwear overnight.
  2. Boot Scrapes at main doors and/or access to facilities with water supply.
  3. First Aid kit to be provided.
  4. Maps & books available for reference on walking in the area, details of local routes & organisations.

CYCLISTS WELCOME

Developed with expert advice and support for the Countryside Agency and the Youth Hostel Association, this scheme is designed to give cyclists the confidence that they are booking quality accommodation that meets their needs.

Specific requirements
  1. A separate space available for drying outdoor clothing and footwear overnight.
  2. Lockable undercover area for bicycles, with an unobstructed entrance.
  3. Access to a water point for washing bicycles & outer garments.
  4. Emergency cycle & puncture repair kit.
  5. First Aid kit to be provided.
  6. Details of at least 1 cycle hire outlet, cycle repair & spares shop.
  7. Maps & books available for reference on cycling in the area, details of local routes & organisations.

PETS WELCOME

For pets owners that want to take a pet with them for a break, the Welcome Pets scheme will give pets owners (dogs, cats and small birds)the confidence that they are booking quality accommodation that meets their and their pets particular needs.

Specific requirements
  1. A water and food bowl provided for each pet accommodated.
  2. A scoop and disposable bags & litter tray (if cats accepted) to be provided.
  3. A dedicated bin for waste disposal.
  4. Pet washing facilities available, bucket, hose & towel
  5. Storage space for pets transportation crate, cages
  6. Local Vet details
  7. Where dogs have free access to garden areas then suitable fencing should be provided.
  8. Where hazards exist for pets, safety equipment to be provided and procedures to be in place.

FAMILIES WELCOME

This scheme will give families the confidence that they are booking quality accommodation that meets their particular needs.

Specific requirements
  1. Cot & Highchair to be available on request where under 4s are accommodated. It should display a kitemark or CE mark.
  2. At least 2 of the following to be provided   Children's books, toys, dvd/videos, games and Channels on TV.
  3. Child & family friendly information to be available, such as :-    Restaurants, local activities, parks, suitable walks(flat), events, shopping, nappy recycling, etc.
  4. Where pools, ponds, and other water features are accessible to guests, clear & prominent signage detailing danger must be displayed to ensure child safety at all times.
  5. Where outdoor gardens & equipment are accessible to guests, clear & prominent signage detailing danger must be displayed to ensure child safety at all times.
  6. Where open fires or wood burners are provided then a suitable fireguard needs to be provided.
  7. Where any additional hazard exists for children, safety equipment must be provided and/or procedure in place.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS ACROSS FOR ALL 4 SCHEMES

  1. Details of nearest, doctor, dentist, 24 hour A&E & all night chemist.
  2. Location and opening times of local shops
  3. Details of the nearest banks, cash machines, public phone, post office & outdoor shops
  4. Information on local public transport or contact details provided.
  5. Details displayed for coastguard, mountain rescue and the main contact numbers, including the 999 and 112.
  6. Emergency contact details for overseas visitors
  7. A torch to be available
