A Group's Guide to North Devon
Holidays are all about spending time with loved ones and creating lasting memories, but it can sometimes be overwhelming to choose things to do and places to eat as a large group, which is why we have compiled our group's guide to North Devon.
What are the best things to do with a large family in North Devon?
The best thing about North Devon is the space. Whether it’s the big beaches of Woolacombe and Saunton Sands, or the uninhabited acres of windswept Exmoor, this is a place where you and your loved ones can truly stretch out.
But there are also attractions that are ideal for big families. The popular Milky Way at High Clovelly is the biggest all-weather family day out in North Devon – the ideal solution when the weather takes a turn for the worse. With over 110,000 sq ft of indoor fun as well as acres of outdoor activities, there’s something for every member of the family. Who knows, Grandma might even take a spin on the Cosmic Typhoon, Devon’s longest, tallest and fastest rollercoaster, while the indoor slides and assault courses are the perfect place to pitch adults against the kids!
Just outside Bideford, The Big Sheep is an equally popular choice of day out for a big family. It manages to combine the wonders of the animal world with some good old-fashioned fun that should have everyone in the family chuckling. There are animal shows such as sheep shearing, dog trials and duck races to enjoy, as well as awesome new activities like the Jumping Pillows (a bit like a huge, air-filled trampoline). And if you ever fancied pitching the generations against each other, there’s also Battlefield Live, where children can compete against parents and grandparents firing invisible infra-red beams up to 200 feet. It’s a bit like paintballing, but without the bruises. Kids of all ages will love the battle-style sound effects!
Situated between Combe Martin and South Molton, Exmoor Zoo is another wonderful day out for the whole family, offering visitors an amazing journey of adventure as well as the chance to get up close and personal to some extraordinary creatures. The large enclosures of the zoo are home to a huge range of animals, including cheetahs, maned wolves, otters and bat-eared foxes. There’s also a large collection of marmosets, gibbons and howler monkeys. And if you’ve ever heard tales of the Exmoor Beast, you’ll enjoy meeting ‘Ebony’, a dark-coloured leopard, thought to be one of only two in the UK available for breeding. Whatever your age, you’re bound to enjoy the close encounters the zoo offers – like stroking an alpaca’s soft fleece, or even handling a tarantula!
Where are the best places for large groups to eat in North Devon?
For a pub in the heart of Exmoor that can accommodate the whole family and offer a great meal in the bargain, get the brood to The Staghunters Inn, which is situated in Brendon in the lovely Doone Valley. You’ll find space aplenty inside as well as five paddocks and a generous beer garden to stretch out in.
For a special occasion, the 17th century Rock Inn in Georgeham is a lovely gastro pub which serves up legendary burgers and fish pie, local ales (including St Austell tribute, Sharpes Doombar and Otter beers, among others) and a 48 bin wine list. Large groups can be comfortably accommodated in the bright and air conservatory.
For a more informal lunch, The Old Mill in Woolacombe serves tasty pub grub and boasts a large outside adventure playground if you’ve got little ones in the party. It’s fully visible from the covered dining tables which means you can relax with a pint of local ale, glass in wine or meal, while keeping an eye on them!
