Cottages in Sticklepath

Sticklepath, a charming little village, with lots of history, right at the edge of Dartmoor National Park attracts many visitors for its beautiful walks and the chance to explore the ‘wilder’ dramatic landscape of the famous moor.

It’s a popular choice for those looking for an active outdoor holiday but also those looking for a tranquil spot to get away from it all.

There are some fabulous walks along the Taw River, plus the southern end of the Tarka Trail also runs through the village and it’s only a 20 minute walk up to the moor. So whether you are just looking for a gentle stroll with beautiful scenery and a picnic spot or a more energetic and challenging hike, you have plenty of options. Its two traditional inns – the Devonshire Arms and the Taw River Inn both offer an excellent choice for a well-deserved refreshment.

For a glimpse into village life in the 19th century, a visit to its ‘Finch Foundry’ is recommended. Now, owned by the National Trust, the Finch Foundry is a working museum of the 19th century water powered foundry, that in its peak produced around 400 edge tools a day and offers regular demonstrations (plus a cream tea at its café).

The traditional market town of Okehampton is just a short drive away and offers a good selection of shops, supermarkets and restaurants plus its many attractions such as its Museum of Dartmoor Life, the castle ruins of Okehampton Castle, and the restored railway line by Dartmoor Railway.

The Granite Way offers a fabulous 11 mile cycle route for cyclists between Okehampton and Lydford. Following the course of the former Southern Railway to the famous Lydford Gorge, it’s mainly traffic free, to the famous Lydford Gorge, with its 30 metre White Lady waterfall.

Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy exploring Black-a-Tor Copse, a high altitude oak woodland, surrounded by moorland heath, which offers home to many lichens and mosses and species of Moorland birds.

And finally because of its close proximity to the A30, Sticklepath is also ideally placed to explore the rest of the South West. Both the North Devon and South Devon coastlines can easily be reached. Plus, for a trip to the city, both Plymouth and Exeter are within an hour’s drive away.
