Set in 50 acres of unspoilt countryside, woodland and meadows on the Devon/Cornwall border near Morwenstow, Gooseham Barton Farm and Cottages offers an idyllic spot to relax and unwind. Especially perfect for the equestrian enthusiast from the most experienced to the absolute beginner, the farm has been a licensed riding stables since 1974 with around 20 ponies and horses to ride throughout the year. Being at the gateway of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there is always so much to discover, whether on foot, bicycle or horseback the stunning landscape with deep wooded valleys and pretty coastal villages is not to be missed. And as all cottages welcome at least two dogs each, your four-legged friend will get to tag along too.
A rocky cove, Marsland Mouth, is within walking distance of Gooseham Barton while the sandy beach, aptly named Sandymouth, is just three miles distant. Gooseham Barton is close to the market towns of Bude, Kilkhampton, Holsworthy, Hartland and Bideford - giving guests a wide variety of places to visit. Gooseham appears in the Domesday book, but the history of the area goes back much further- Morwenstow was named after St Morwenna who arrived in the 500s from Wales, along with around twenty brothers and sisters who settled in the valleys, moors and coastal area and became the early saints. There are still lots of remnants from these days in the holy wells that dot the landscape. Along the coastline are countless shipwrecks, over a hundred are documented in a few miles. For hundreds of years the few people eking a living could supplement their living with the bounty from the sea, and the area had a reputation for 'wrecking' or driving ships onto the coast by confusing them with lights. Whether this was true or not, a popular local prayer was 'Let there be no shipwrecks this night, but if there are let them be bountiful.' Opposite the churchyard in Morwenstow are the Rectory Tea Rooms serving lunches and cream teas from Easter until the end of October. Just back from the church at Crosstown is the Bush Inn, a country pub serving meals. On the other side of the valley at Welcombe is another country pub, The Old Smithy Inn featuring retro decor, good food and a warm welcome. It is a pleasant ride or walk from Gooseham across the valley. Slightly further afield are plenty of interesting places for everyone - gardeners will love to see Hartland Abbey and Docton Mill Gardens, children will love The Milky Way adventure park and The Big Sheep, and beach lovers will find a spot for every persuasion, whether a big sandy expanse at low tide Sandymouth, or a quiet and romantic spot at hidden Stanbury Mouth. For those interested in surfing lessons, there is the Freewave surf academy at nearby Widemouth beach. Golfers can have a round at Ivyleaf, which is a 9 hole and good for all abilities, or for a more serious game try the links course at Bude Golf Club.
For those who just like to potter around their cottage, Gooseham Barton is the perfect place. And with four cottages to choose from, you can come away with large groups of friends and family. Whether you just want to help to feed the horses or the sheep, have a game of table tennis in the games room, enjoy a barbecue in the courtyard, or just enjoy the walks through the woodlands and winding country lanes nearby, there really is something for everyone.
William Cottage has a very romantic air about it and although it sleeps a family of four comfortably, couples will also feel very much as home due to its thick rugs, deep cushioned sofas and large inglenook fireplace with multi-fuel stove. The master bedroom is beautifully furnished with antique pieces dotted around the room and a double bed with brass headboard, while the second bedroom is perfect for children with two 2'6" beds. The large bathroom has recently been refurbished and boasts an instantaneous large-headed power shower over the bath for luxurious, powerful showers.William Cottage is also ideal for two groups of guests thanks to a connecting door from the kitchen to Norman Cottage next door. Outside, there is plenty of space in the communal courtyard, garden and barbecue area to relax and a bench near to the front door.
