Lynton and Lynmouth Cottages

Sitting on the edge of Exmoor, Lynton and its neighbour Lynmouth - give visitors the very best of North Devon.

The East and West Lyn Rivers converge at Lynmouth, the village on the edge of the moor. It sits at the bottom of a deep gorge and is home to a harbour, visitor centre for Exmoor and an intriguing water powered cliff railway that will take you up the cliff to Lynton. It’s a great spot to set off on a boat trip, to enjoy a cream tea, an ice cream or a walk, although all roads out are steep! One great thing about Lynmouth is its proximity to the rest of Exmoor and the beaches at Ilfracombe or even further west at Woolacombe. So it’s a great place to make your base.

Up river is Watersmeet, an absolutely delightful spot for a cream tea at the  National Trust’s oh-so-cutesie tea room, a former fishing lodge. It’s the starting point for 40 miles of walks up the East Lyn river valley.

Lynton, at the top of the hill, is the  big brother to Lynmouth. It’s got a cinema, an arts and craft centre and lots of independent shops. It’s also the gateway to Valley of the Rocks, a wonderful valley with amazing rock formations that overlooks the Bristol Channel. Its ‘Castle Rock’ is an awe inspiring pinnacle of rock that overlooks the valley. Go and see it. You don’t have to climb to the top, but  if you do, the wind, sea, rocks and landscape will take your breath away.

From Valley of Rocks you can head  west along the toll road towards Lee Bay, Woody Bay and Heddon’s Mouth, a lovely beach with a beautiful walk leading to it, and, for good measure,  a great pub at the end of it.
