Clovelly Cottages

Picture-postcard Clovelly has a cobbled main street lined with traditional cottages, narrow passageways and tiny lanes, just begging to be explored. Follow the street as it descends through solid rock to a tiny harbour and lifeboat station, both protected by an ancient stone breakwater. In bygone days goods were carried up the steep main street and alleys by donkeys, but today these famous residents give rides to children and pose for photographs while, for a small fee, a Land Rover service ferries visitors up and down the steep hill via a back road.

Nearby is the 13,000-acre Hartland Peninsula, one of the largest royal manors in the Saxon times of King Alfred. Must-see places include Hartland Point, which rises 350ft above sea level and is home to a famous lighthouse, and Hartland Quay with its dramatic rugged coastline, unbelievable rock formations and fascinating geological sites. For a taste of true Devon life and to escape the crowds, head inland to Hartland village, home to a handsome Georgian square and a thriving community which offers a warm welcome to all.
