Totnes and River Dart Cottages

The Elizabethan market town of Totnes is situated on the stunning River Dart with an international reputation for it’s lively and diverse community. Located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it is a great base for exploring the region all year round.

The town is dominated by it’s long main high street which climbs up through the town. The narrow street is packed full of intriguing independent shops and cafes making it a shopaholics dream. Visit on a Friday or Saturday and enjoy the large market with tasty food, vintage clothes, antique and gift stalls

At the top of town, just past the historic archway is Totnes Castle, which dates back to Norman times. Walk a little further out of town along the River Dart and you will discover Dartington Hall which forms part of a 1200-acre estate. The Hall dates back to medieval times and its adjoining buildings have been converted into a pub, café and unique cinema.

You can enjoy the Dart valley by taking a boat trip up river to the historic town of Dartmouth, taking in some glorious scenery and riverside villages along the way.

One of the oldest villages along the river bank is Stoke Gabriel which has an 800-yew tree in the grounds of it’s church yard. The village boosts two pubs and a riverside café and with only one road in and out it’s a perfect place to escape from it all. The village quayside is very a popular spot for crabbing and it’s also possible to hire kayaks to explore the river under your own power.

Further on up river is Galmpton which is home to the Greenway Estate, Agatha Christies former waterside home. Now owned by the National Trust it offers an intriguing insight to this world-famous author life. From the quay just below Greenway you can take the little passenger ferry over to the picturesque waterside village of Dittisham which has a stunningly located waterside café and pub.

The main centre of Galmpton is just a short walk inland from the river and has all you need, a butcher, post office and general stores and traditional pub. It is also well positioned for exploring Torbay including Brixham.
