Inside the New Gallery

The New Gallery

This dog-friendly art gallery and showroom, has a unique local twist in its tail, indeed it’s one of the most impressive displays of art, pottery, sculpture and design that you will find in the county. All of the work on show here is available for sale, and there is a huge range, both in terms of style and the size of the price tags hanging from the pieces. Not only that, it is all produced by l...

The Kings Arms

Nestled in the picturesque village of Georgeham, the Kings Arms is a fantastically friendly pub, both for those on two legs and their four-pawed companions. Above-bar treats for those at the top end of the lead include ales from local breweries such as Wizard, while down at floor level you'll find strategically placed water bowls to rehydrate the hound. Ask nicely (remember to wag your tail) and j...

Ship & Pilot

Beer used to be the cornerstone of most pubs, until many of them transformed into restaurants, but it's still very much all about the ale at the Ship & Pilot. Centrally located in the midst of Ilfracombe, its frontage – covered in cartoon illustrations of some of the breweries whose ales it stocks – doesn't give it the immediate impression of being a particularly traditional pub.

Saunton Sands

  • Near Braunton, Devon EX33 1LQ

One of the best beaches not just in Devon, but in the country, a saunter on Saunton Sands delivers a golden, surf-stroked sun-splattered playground that extends along the North Devon coast for well over three miles. It is privately owned but publically accessible, but best of all, beyond a tiny section close to the beach (which you can actually avoid altogether of you go through the dunes) your do...

The Prince of Wales

A traditional Devonian pub that offers a subtly different feel to the George and Dragon, which is located right next door. Still with low ceilings and classic wooden beams throughout, the Prince offers a proper pub feel, and is popular with visitors and locals alike, although it appeals to a slightly younger crowd, with a pool table located in the main bar and live sport showing on the TV.

The Quay

It might be owned by controversial animal-pickling artist Damien Hirst, but this trendy eating and drinking joint welcomes dogs (at least to its outside tables) and promises not to put them in a tank of formaldehyde. Bringing a slice of Soho cool to the otherwise kiss-me-quick Ilfracombe harbourfront, the Quay is positioned right opposite Hirst's other gift to Ilfracombe: a 66-feet-high statue of ...

The Quay Harbour and Larkstone Beach

  • Ilfracombe, Devon EX34 9QG

In the shadow of the recently installed Damien Hirst installation Verity (an eye-grabbing 66-feet-high brass statue of a pregnant woman, spearing the North Devon sky with a sword held aloft in her other), you will find Ilfracombe’s lovely little fishing harbour, as traditional as Verity is modern.

Inside the Red Barn

The Red Barn

This restaurant and bar in the middle of Woolacombe is built squarely on four pillars: food, beer, surfing and music – not necessarily in that order. Most importantly, though, it is a venue which welcomes people with dogs and is happy for the hounds to hang 10 with their posse in the large bar and the first part of the restaurant (the top section is reserved for people without pets).

Ship Aground Inn situated next to the church

The Ship Aground Inn

Beautifully positioned next to the village church in the lovely clifftop hamlet of Mortehoe, the Ship Aground is a fantastically friendly vessel for salty old sea dogs and land-lubbing mutts alike. The first thing you see on entering the bar is a notice welcoming customers accompanied by dogs (with the entirely reasonable caveat that they must be well-behaved – both customers and canines – and...

The Thatch

A beautiful village pub in the middle of super popular Croyde, the Thatch positively oozes with olde-schoole Devonian charm. The thatched roof sits on top of the pub like a thick head of hair, and inside regulars mix with blow-ins as they sip pints of real ale and bask in the heat of an open fire and relax in the warmth of the general atmosphere.

Tunnels Beaches

'The Tunnels' is the collective name for a unique and multifaceted attraction in the popular seaside town of Ilfracombe, where a network of hand-carved tunnels lead through the rock face and out to several sheltered beaches and tidal Victorian bathing pools. Surf shops and shacks are ten a penny all over North Devon, particularly in Woolacombe, but very few operate such an open-door policy for paw traffic as the Bay Surf Shop.
