A magical hideaway in some of the most beautiful countryside in England, Fish Cottage, with its many original features: charming well furnished rooms, well-stocked log fires, squishy sofas, and large well-maintained private garden, is the ideal spot for a romantic weekend or a countryside adventure with family or friends. Midway between Exmoor and Dartmoor, in Henry Williamson’s Tarka Country, with woodland walks, riding, cycling & fishing all available, Fish Cottage offers the chance to experience authentic Devon country living - but with Wi-Fi! Great pubs/food nearby incl. "War Horse" pub, Duke of York. Dogs welcome.
One of a group of former estate houses built by the Earl of Portsmouth in the 19th Century to house the gamekeeper for the old Devonshire estate of Eggesford House, Fish cottage retains its original 1840s character and in its surprisingly spacious interior is a selection of individually furnished rooms in which to relax and enjoy your stay. Nestling in mature woodland, with a large 3rd of an acre private cottage garden, the cottage offers a peaceful retreat, away from it all, while being only a short distance from the nearest village shops.
The surrounding woodlands are all available for guests to enjoy and there are many public footpaths leading from the garden into Eggesford Forest - ideal for dog walking. Simply step out of the front door and walk along the many trails through the ancient Heywood Forest into the unspoiled Devon countryside of Tarka Country. Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks are a short drive away and are renowned for their beautiful scenery and opportunities for walking, riding and fishing. The spectacular North Devon coast, with its sandy beaches and fabulous coastal walks is an ideal spot for a day trip from the cottage.
Ground floor: There is a well-equipped Country Kitchen with modern electric cooking appliances, refrigerator, Dualit toaster and washing machine. The Bathroom has a large basin, Victorian roll top bath and hand shower. The Garden Dining Room has a large sofa for sitting and gazing out into the garden and an oak table and chairs for six. The large Sitting Room has a wood burning stove, comfy sofa and 2 leather armchairs.
The book-filled Study has an open fire, antique bureau, leather sofa and 2 leather pub armchairs.
Upstairs: Two spacious Cottage Bedrooms overlook the garden. With antique wardrobes and dressing tables, comfy double beds, hypoallergenic Miracoil mattresses and luxury cotton sheets.

We're lucky enough to live in a rural cottage too and so Fish Cottage felt like a home from home for us. We walked with the dogs in the woods most days and being able to pop out the garden gate and just down the lane for off-lead heaven was great. Doris and Betty (our Sealyhams) also appreciated exploring your very lovely dog friendly garden and although the weather was a bit wet and changeable the week we stayed (my sister stayed the week before and got the sunshine and blistering heat), it is a lovely garden to relax in.Spending time with family, all gathering for a wedding in Eggesford, was the main reason for our visit, but we also spent much of our time just chillin' in the cottage, walking, reading and listening to Leonard (Cohen, one of your tapes I think?). Perfect! And we had a great meal in The Duke of York, Iddesleigh too, so thanks for that recommendation.Next time we're down in Devon we will book again and I will recommend Fish Cottage to anyone looking to do the same, as, I'm sure, will my sister, who booked it the week prior to us and loved it too.J Squires - 6th June 2017
The Fish Cottage is ideally located in the countryside of mid-Devon with a short drive to the coast lines and the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks. The cottage is beautifully decorated with a close attention to details. We enjoyed the beautiful garden, the cosy atmosphere of the salons and sure the very friendly welcome from Lenice who did everything to make our stay just perfect. We have spent a wonderful week.Gouders, Brussels - 1st August 2016
Beautiful cottage in a fantastic setting. Charming doesn't even begin to describe it, we fell in love with the place as soon as we opened the front door. Much bigger than we had expected as well. Nothing at all to fault about the place and we would highly recommend it. Hope to visit again.Susan, Val-d'Isère, France - 1st June 2016
5 Star accommodation - we had the most wonderful 4 nights at Fish Cottage. Simply beautiful, tranquil and made to feel so welcome by Lenice and the owners. Highly recommend with great places to walk just at the end of the lane so perfect for 4 legged guests also! Many thanks Sam & Richard, Dudley & DilysSam Batchelor, Kings Langley Herts - 1st June 2016
This is a magical hideaway in the middle of Devon - halfway between Exmoor and Dartmoor. It is as charming and comfortable as the pictures suggest, full of quirky details, garden flowers, squishy sofas and well stocked fireplaces. We felt immediately at home and were sad to leave. The garden is also beautifully maintained, and is full of birds whose singing will wake you up in time for your next walk. Highly recommended if you want to get away from it all.Julian, London - 1st May 2016
Excellent stay in this cosy Cottage ! The surprise in the kitchen, the garden, the interieur, everything. Exactly what we expected - with our continental point of view ; more « british » is not possible. Simply great!Daniel, Lörrach, Germany - 1st May 2016
Fish cottage is an exceptional place to stay. We loved it! The cottage is beautifully decorated throughout and had a really cosy warm vibe. Communication with the host was excellent. Also Lenice was super ( although we kept missing paths) but very grateful for her willingness to help if anything arose. Fresh bread, butter, a bottle of wine waiting upon arrival- all such thoughtful touches. All in all superb. Thank you so much!!Sanna - 1st April 2016
We spent six nights here in April 2016, to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. The cottage was clean, warm and cosy. The bed was very comfortable and the bedroom spacious. The kitchen had everything we needed. The washing machine was very handy. I loved the dining room that looked out on to the beautiful garden. The bathroom was downstairs and being used to an ensuite I thought this would be a problem but it was fine. We usually shower so it was a change for us to have baths instead and the hand held shower over the bath was fine for hair washing. The other change for us was there was no TV but we went prepared for this and quite enjoyed the week without a tele and there is a huge selection of books to read.We found plenty of places to visit including Clovelly, Rosemore, Babbacombe,, Dawlish and Canonteign all within an hours driving. The local pubs did really good meals and dogs were welcome. Our dog loved big garden and the walks out the back in the woods. All in all a very good holiday we hope to return. The Jacksons, Bedford - 1st April 2016
Translated from German: Translation:Michael was very courteous, helpful and very welcoming, very sympathetic. Already in the run-up to and during our stay he has patiently all questions, especially the fly fishing our son's answered him, useful addresses and promising places to fish and allows access to it. Michael and Julie do not live on-site, Lenice and Chris were therefore asked to take our reception. We were warmly greeted with flowers, wine, cookies and a cozy lit Cottage receive and we were immediately felt as in the house of a friend. The cottage is charming and a little gem, lovingly furnished with antiques and personal items, very comfortable and well maintained, thus also to treat with care. Kitchen and bathroom are wood-panelled room and well equipped, the latter including a free-standing bathtub, very comfortable. Michael and Julie have created a beautiful garden, both ornamental and herbs and kitchen gardens, in which we operate are likely herbs, potatoes and apples. After a week, the laundry was changed, things that we did not expect, and Lenice and Chris, Michael in NY, there were always for our other concerns. Very friendly and helpful we also met our neighborhood. I have rarely been so open, friendly and warm people experienced as these three, and the people in Devonshire, which we had to deal with. The landscape is beautiful, green and fertile and the weather just English - I have incredibly beautiful cloud formations, light and colors seen in nature. And silence.Sylvia, Stuttagrt - 1st September 2015
Wir würden sehr herzlich und hilfsbereit empfangen und fühlten uns in dem wunderschönen und gemütlichen Haus gleich sehr wohl, wie in einem richtigen Zuhause.Annette - 1st August 2015
We had a wonderful stay in a very cosy and comfortable cottage. The place and the garden are very charming in a beautiful enviroment. We felt very welcome and can recommend the place to all looking for a location to relax and recover.Sandra - 1st August 2015
We spent our honeymoon in Fish Cottage and loved every minute of it. The cottage has bags of character and the owner clearly has a wonderful eye for detail, from the choice of vintage furniture to the driftwood handles on the cupboards. It's in a wonderfully secluded spot, surrounded by woodland. The garden is a real delight, a quintessential English cottage garden will little rooms of different character, full of flowers and herbs. We loved to simply sit in the garden listening to nothing but birdsong and the wind in the trees. Most of all we were blown away with how welcoming Michael (the owner) and Lenice (the housekeeper) were. They really went the extra mile - knowing we were honeymooners we arrived to flower petals on the bedspread, fresh cut garden flowers in vases, a ready-laid fire and a lovely bottle of Prosecco in the fridge! We couldn't have asked for more. Thanks Michael and Lenice for making a great week all the more special.Caroline & Andy - 1st July 2015
Fish Cottage is absolutely magical. The house itself is charming, full of character but with lots of lovely quirky touches. We loved all the drift wood door handles, artwork and amazing lighting. The sun room was the perfect place for dinners and conversation that went on long into the evening. The kitchen was well equipped and we made good use of the BBQ. The garden was a huge highlight of our stay. The photographs don't do it justice. We had some lovely meals out there, lounged on the lawn, roamed through the flowers and made crumble from the rhubarb and apples growing in the kitchen garden. Chumleigh is the nearest place to stock up on food but make sure you don't go on sat or wed after 1pm as the deli and butcher close early! If you're looking for a slow pace, total relaxation and a break away from everything then Fish Cottage is definitely for you.Kirsty - 1st July 2015
Fabulous place, idylic bolt hole, situated in lovely countryside. The fishing was superb and a great way to spend the day. Michael was extremely helpful prior arrival and Lenice was the perfect host whilst there - a bottle of wine on chill was the perfect start to a break away. Great attention to detail. We'll be back! Thank you both.Lucy - 1st May 2015
Cottage even more idyllic than we expected from photos and description. Really comfy, spacious bedrooms, lovely dining room with garden view and cosy lounge and study/library both with log fires. Tea and cake (+ bottle in fridge) awaited us on arrival. To sum up, peace, tranquillity and birdsong.Laura from Brighton - 1st May 2015
This is a stunning cottage in a beautiful location. We stayed for a long weekend in the autumn and loved every second. Mike and Julie have done a superb job at making this a truly stunning space. Don't hesitate - book it now!Jane Craigie, Scotland - 1st January 2015
