Dubbed ‘Happy Dog Beach’ by the locals for good reason, Porthkidney Sands is tucked in the nook of St Ives Bay, with Carbis Bay to the west and Hayle Towans to the east, just a couple of miles from St Ives town centre. It’s up against some stiff local competition in the beauty stakes, but being less accessible than its better-known neighbours means that Porthkidney remains untouched by the masses.
In fact, this beauty – which is, in fact, a very easy walk from St Uny Church in Lelant – is often the domain of just a handful of dog walkers, who walk the vast expanse of sand and the wonderfully large area of dunes behind it with smug satisfaction. What with a mile of empty sands flanked by the Hayle Estuary at one end and cliffs at the other, the dogs that frolic here (and their owners) have every reason to be very happy indeed. And, if and when you want to get back in amongst the thick of the tourists, it’s only a two-mile walk back to St Ives along the South West Coast Path. No facilities, and only limited parking near the church, but that’s half the attraction.
