This fishing village on East Devon's Jurassic Coast has a name that inevitably pulls people in for a look (and a pint), but once you're there you will discover that the magnetism extends well beyond the signposts. Beer is a gorgeous place, with a lovely little working harbour, a pebbly beach and – most importantly – this extremely dog-friendly pub.
Occupying a historic Grade II listed building, the Dolphin is family run and family friendly, welcoming children and pets into both of its bars. (Children have to be gone by 9pm – dogs are welcome all night.) The comfortable and lively Long Bar is open from 10am through until late. Snacks are served and it has games including table skittles, darts and pool to keep everyone entertained.
Every Friday evening and Sunday afternoon the Long Bar features live music too. If you’re after a more substantial meal in more refined setting, the Lounge Bar is open 10am–3pm and 6pm–11pm, and serves meals from a bigger menu (lots of good fresh fish, including skate, lobster and lemon sole), plus they also do a good Sunday lunch.
