Vault Beach & Gorran Haven
One of the finest beaches in the St Austell area, Vault is a long, south-facing bay nestled in the shelter of Dodman point. Calm sea conditions and a crescent of fine shingle lures walkers from the coast path, but the fifteen-minute walk from the car park at Lamledra cliff – or half-a-mile walk from the village of Gorran Haven – keeps the crowds at bay, although you’re in fact just three miles from the tourist honeypots of Mevagissey and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Another secret to Vault’s pristine peacefulness is the absence of any facilities on the beach (bring supplies!), and although it’s fine for swimming there are no lifeguards on duty. The sand is coarse sand and shingle, although low tide exposes areas of finer sand. There’s a nudist area in one corner if that’s your thing, and the nearest parking is at Lamledra cliff or neighbouring Gorran Haven, which has its own sandy beaches that are more readily accessible and well equipped for families and fishermen – plus shops, places to eat and other facilities. Gorran Haven beach is dog-friendly but mutts must be kept on a lead at all times.
