Watergate Bay & Mawgan Porth
It might be the well-heeled beach gang that hog the front-row sea views from Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall on Watergate Bay, but it’s the surfers and dogs that make the most of this mile-long stretch of perfect sand all year-round. While wetsuit-clad sporty types battle the waves and try their hand and all manner of extreme water sports on offer here, dogs bound with excitement along the vast sandy expanse backed by staggering cliffs.
Take a low-tide walk along the wave-pounded sands to Trevelgue Head, looping back along the South West Coast Path to make the most of the views. Or follow the coast path in the opposite direction to the next beach along at Mawgan Porth, which is equally dog-friendly but much quieter, enjoying a sheltered position nestled between two grassy headlands – plus it has a dog-friendly pub in the Merrymoor Inn, which serves decent lunches and cream teas.
Back at Watergate Bay the welcome to hounds also extends beyond the beach, with the Watergate Bay Hotel’s stylish Living Space bar and Beach Hut café both inviting sandy dogs into the mix.
