A more cosy, peaceful and enchanting fisherman’s cottage retaining plenty of rustic charm and original features, perfectly nestled next to a beautiful estuary and quayside, would be hard to find. After a long day winding around the streets of Appledore, the best remedy for soothing tired walking muscles is this welcoming cottage.
The lounge, complete with original exposed brickwork and comfy sofas, is the perfect spot to enjoy a family film night around the Smart TV. Head to the rear of the cottage to whip up a hearty meal with all the local goodies you’ve collected in the rustic kitchen/diner. As day turns to night, head up to the first floor to find two characterful bedrooms to call your own, plus another cosy bedroom on the second floor that features stunning panoramic views over the rooftops across the whole estuary. At the rear of the cottage, you’ll find an enclosed decked terrace with a gradual incline, where you can dine alfresco or stargaze long past bedtime with the wonderful estuary scenery as your backdrop.
One of the country’s finest examples of a chocolate-box village, Appledore is a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled lanes scattered with a unique selection of quaint tearooms and superb restaurants, leading down to a historic quay perfect for crabbing or a leisurely promenade on a clear day. From the quay 0.5 miles away, jump aboard the seasonal ferry to sail across the estuary to the sandy stretch of Instow, offering magnificent dunes perfect for panting pups to play in plus a wonderful deli, well-stocked with local produce. Venture further along the coastline to explore the cliffside village of Clovelly (13.5 miles), which is almost untouched by time and features some breathtaking unspoilt coastal views.
