Once a sail loft, this delightful two storey cottage lies in the pretty fishing village of Appledore, close to the beach at Westward Ho! (2 miles) and the historic harbour town of Bideford (3 miles). This detached property retains many period features such as the quirky recesses in the walls. Just a short walk from the quayside, you can explore narrow streets, little shops, old pubs and bistros bursting with local seafood, while fishing boats bob alongside the quay. A ferry crosses the estuary to the village of Instow, home to a pleasant sand and shingle beach.

On entering this charming 17th century house, you will be impressed by the elegant lounge/diner, with its beamed ceiling, TV, hi-fi and living-flame fire. The small kitchen has a mid-century feel, with roll-top drawer handles, slatted cupboards and multi-paned windows. The history and stories of the Sail Loft live on within it. The bedrooms echo this, with their beams and obtuse angles, melding with sympathetic furniture. Outside, an enclosed courtyard offers seating and BBQ, and a covered pond which will require children to be supervised.

Just across the estuary is Braunton Burrows (16 miles by road), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It’s the largest sand dune system in England, home to many rare species. Similarly, Bideford and Appledore host a plethora of independent shops, pubs, restaurants, craft shops and galleries. Visit Appledore’s excellent Maritime Museum. From Clovelly (13 miles), walk the 6 astounding miles along the coast to Hartland Point. You will never forget it, or the olde-worlde charms of this delightful property.

The backyard garden is messed with timber and gutter. No place to sit and relax. The window and the door leading to the garden cannot be locked. So anybody could get into the loft. The sofa and its quilts and cushions is filthy. Not a place you want to sit on.

Do not stay here if you would like to use the court yard. Wifi is poor, facilities lacking, insufficient towels provided for a week and no washing machine. Had to clean the kitchen myself. Bathroom damp and dangerous and the lighting did not work

A little hidden gem of a cottage and do not be put off by the alleyway as the accommodation is worth it. Just note that there is no washing machine but I am sure if you needed too then you could find a launderette and also in the welcome pack it states coin meter but we never found one in the cottage, so can only assume it was taken out as we neverRead more ran out of electric. I would recommend this little hidden gem but it is for only four people cofortably. Hide

The apartment is handy for exploring North Devon and Cornwall, with many well known tourist attractions within easy reach by road. Unfortunately access with luggage etc. is slightly difficult due to the property's location, hidden away down a network of alleyways. Definitely look to park in the nearby Churchfields Pay and Display car park (0.3 mileRead mores away), as street parking anywhere nearer the property is a near impossibility. And don't forget to have a pint at the Champ! Hide

We love our stay at the Sail Loft...The location is great, about a couple of minutes walking distance to the bakery, winebar, pub, etc. You can see the adjacent patio through the bay window and is accessed by the small door, next down the alley (no 2). Lovely cottage . Cosy and quaint . The windows in the bedrooms were locked and could only be crack open a tiny bit, which made getting any ventilation into the bedrooms was not possible..the only exit to the property was the door. If we had to evacuate because of fire, no emergency exit??

Although the walk down the alley way to the cottage was unlit and over grown the property was a good location. The beds were comfy and the kitchen was well equipped. The cottage could definitely do with an update as everything seemed very worn. Access to the Sail Loft is a bit tricky due to the narrow alley way. I found it was all we needed for four of us. Bathroom could do with an update but everything we needed was there. There is no outdoor space and the two main sash windows overlook someone elses courtyard, so we didnt want to open them. Small but comfortable. Parking in Appledore isRead more a lottery. Park in the first space you find, dont gamble on getting one closer. Local carparks are free from 1800-0800. Hide
