Escape to the countryside in this idyllic retreat, just outside the quaint Devon village of Buckland Brewer. The property is perfectly placed to explore North Devon’s stunning beaches, such as Westward Ho! (6.5 miles) and Instow (9 miles), as well as the beautiful wilderness of Exmoor National Park (just under 30 miles). After a long walk, return to your cosy bolthole to relax in the open-plan living space, dine alfresco on the peaceful patio or wander down to the 13th-century thatched inn for a sundowner.

The pretty stone barn conversion has a reverse-level layout, with a light and airy ground-floor king-size bedroom. On the first floor, you’ll find a fabulous open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner which is full of character, thanks to an impressive vaulted ceiling and exposed beams. Unwind here at the end of a busy day to catch up with your favourite programme on the Smart TV. The cottage has two delightful outdoor areas: a sheltered and enclosed patio with garden furniture, firepit, charcoal bbq and a further patio area where you can relax and admire the views over the surrounding countryside. An additional large lawned area is also available opposite the property for dogs.

Nearby, the small village of Instow is packed with quintessential seaside charm. Wander along its sandy shores, before enjoying a homemade cake in the friendly cafe or a drink in one of the traditional village pubs. The traffic-free Tarka Trail runs through the village, and you can follow it along the river for 6 miles to the bustling market town of Barnstaple. A must for the itinerary is the unique fishing village of Clovelly (9 miles). Clinging to the hillside, this picturesque village has a steep cobbled high street lined with white-washed cottages adorned with flowers, leading down to a picture-postcard harbour where you can sit for hours watching the fishing boats and marvelling at the rugged scenery.

Superb location for exploring the wider area. Swallow cottage has everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay, plus the advantage of a friendly local pub within a short walk. Hosts Lyn and Peter ensured we had settled in well and provided scones jam and cream, alongside a bottle of wine, which was a nice touch. We hope to visit again.
