Property code: OC-COAS1

This delightful and quintessentially cosy property is a former coastguard's cottage located in the small hamlet of Stoke between Hartland Quay and Hartland village and will immediately make you feel at home. Its wonderful location and homely interiors make this the perfect place to base yourself if you want to explore the delights of Devon, and you’re less than 8 miles from the Cornish border should you wish to venture that way.

Very comfortable throughout, the living room benefits from a wood burner set in an attractive stone fireplace, surrounded by two terracotta sofas. There is a separate dining room with a feature fireplace and a stylish and well-equipped kitchen. You can enjoy the countryside views to the sea beyond from the half landing leading to three attractive bedrooms and bathroom on the first floor. Very large mature gardens extend some two hundred feet, with several sloping lawned areas with shrubs and small covered pond. A paved patio sits adjacent to the house to enjoy al fresco meals or simply relax on warm summer evenings.

The scenery along this coastline is truly dramatic and there are some beautiful spots nearby to visit. Hartland Abbey, a elegant 18th-century mansion with gardens leading to the sea is under a mile away, otherwise you could head to the pretty village of Clovelly with its cobbled streets and lovely harbour - an ancient village perched on a cliff with no vehicle access. There are plenty of spectacular walks all around the cottage that take you to tiny coves and harbours, once the haunt of smugglers, and the beautiful sight of Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall is just 2 miles away. If you want a bit of retail therapy, the market town of Bideford or the coastal town of Bude are both 16 miles distant in opposite directions.

The cottage is ideally situated for exploring the nearby coast and SW Coastal path. It is well equipped and provides everything you might need. We booked the cottage because our daughter had been there a couple of years ago and we would book it again if we happened to return to the area.

Great location and excellent cottage, lots of space and plenty of crockery and utensils etc. It's a really peaceful location and also well placed for walks along the coast both North and South or inland to Hartland and beyond.

What a wonderfully comfortable and convenient cottage - right next door to the most enormous and beautiful church and literally three minutes drive to the coastal path walk overlooking Hartland Quay. Totally disregard the previous comment on cleanliness - it is scrubbed and shining, and Tim the contact person could not be more helpful and friendlyRead more. Hide

This cottage needs a complete deep clean and some maintenance. It's size and layout are fabulous. It's well equipped but; It is by far the dirtiest place I have ever stayed in. It is advertised as a 4* property yet in it's current state, it's no more than a 2*. There was a smell of fresh paint so someone had obviously been in and slapped some paiRead morent about. I say slapped because they had left flicked paint or worse still, just smeared along the surface they were painting next to. Paint flecks don't affect much but they draw your eye and you see how dirty the door handle is, which in turn makes you look at the whole door and you see how dirty it is. The ancient storage heaters all need some maintenance, better till, replacing. The heater in the double bedroom didn't work at all. Some had dials that were stuck. Some dials spun round but made no change to any heat coming out. All of them needed to be cleaned. The oven is disgraceful. When touching the oven shelves my hands were covered in grease and soot. I would have cleaned them but the scrub bud left under the sink had food debris still left in it !! Response from holidaycottages.co.uk: Thank you for your review. The homeowner has visited the cottage to fully investigate this and has confirmed that all relevant problems have been resolved. Hide

This is the best cottage weve ever visited. Beautiful remote position, incredibly comfortable beds, sofa and heating. A better equipped kitchen than weve ever had in a holiday let. Loved it!

This traditional cottage is set in a stunning location, just 10-15 mins walk to Hartland Quay, where the sunsets are amazing. The garden provides an exciting space for anyone with dogs, and is a peaceful haven of an evening, especially with the peel of bells from the adjacent, St Nectans church.
