Summercombe is a Grade two listed traditional stone and slate bank barn which for several hundred years has served this Devon farm. It stands nestled into the hillside, yet perched above the sea on open farmland in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty some two miles inland from Watermouth Castle and not far from Berrynarbor and Ilfracombe.

The picturesque and prize winning village of Berrynarbor has a choice of character inns serving local produce and real ales. Ilfracombe with its pretty fishing harbour surrounded by towering cliffs, provides beautiful coastal scenery for walkers and cyclists as well as boasting a great selection of attractions, including the Victorian Tunnels Beaches, Damien Hirst’s Verity and various eateries including a Michelin star restaurant. The award winning family beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde are a short drive away as are the wilds of Exmoor.

This stunning barn conversion has been recently architecturally designed to create a fabulous living space whilst retaining its traditional features and atmosphere and is also home to a small collection of work by local artists. A double height entrance hall provides a great welcome and an area to place those muddy boots after an exhilarating coastal walk. There is practical slate flooring throughout the downstairs but with the added bonus of underfloor heating. The two bedrooms on the ground level are spacious and both have built in wardrobes, ensuite facilities and windows with wooden shutters.  The master bedroom benefits from a super king bed and has three steps leading down to a superb ensuite with roll top bath with sky views, separate shower, vanity unit and WC.  Bedroom two has twin zip ‘n’ link beds (that can be converted to a super king bed on request) and an ensuite shower room. Off the hall a fitted cupboard provides a utility area with washing machine and tumble dryer.

From the spacious entrance hall an oak and metal open tread staircase leads up to a glazed mezzanine and into the contemporary open plan living space, this time with a warm oak flooring with underfloor heating. On one side you have the lounge area with roof lights flowing throughout and three comfortable sofas placed for tranquil reading time next to the woodburner on cooler evenings.  On the other side, the kitchen area with a large wooded dining table and along one wall a modern range of units with all appliances built in, again flooded with light from the roof lights and looking out over the fields behind.

Outside a raised patio area with garden furniture and barbeque is located to one side of the property and on another side there is a small lawned area.  When bringing your pet please ensure it is kept on a lead outside due to livestock in surrounding farmland, however the owners have also provided an enclosed paddock ideal for exercising your pet.  You may also wish to stroll through a pretty meadow and pick up the bridle path that will take you on a coastal walk to the village of Hele with its tiny cove which is pet friendly all year round, pubs and spectacular coastal walks.

Accommodation: Ground floor: double height hallway. Utility area with washing machine and tumble dryer.  Bedroom one with superking bed, three steps down to en-suite bathroom with roll top bath, separate shower with fixed head and hand set, vanity unit and WC.  Bedroom two with zip n link twin beds which can be made into a superking on request and an ensuite shower room with fixed head and hand set vanity unit and WC.  First Floor: Open plan lounge, sofas, Smart TV, Bluetooth Soundbar, woodburner with starter supply of kindling and logs.  Kitchen/diner with electric oven, induction hob, integrated fridge, separate freezer, dishwasher, coffee machine and microwave.

Facilities and Services: Linen and towels. Air Source underfloor heating throughout. Wi-Fi broadband. No smoking. One pet welcome. Travel cot and Highchair available. Patio area with garden furniture and barbeque. Lawned area and use of grounds with stream (care should be taken with small children) Field for exercising your pet. Private parking for 2 cars(more on request). Electric car charging point. Storage for bikes and surfboards. Arr/Dep for weekly bookings is Friday.

Summercombe was a beautifully appointed cottage. We had a fantastic week exploring the wonderful North Devon coastline. The owners made us feel welcome (and supplied fresh eggs!)

Mr C,

On arrival at Summercombe after a long, difficult year we were not disappointed. The cottage and its facilities were superb and all the little extras made it that extra special. Fantastic setting friendly and helpful owners and the most adorable pet (Teddy) ❤ We have loved staying here - plenty to do. Lots of local walks (very hilly) and amazing hills. The coastal path from Hele Bay to Combe Martin has some glorious views and hiring of kayaks to explore the coastal coved is a must. The beach and sand dunes of Saunton Sands with a spot of lunch at the beachside grill is also recommended. Our last evening was spent on Barricane Beach where the curry is so tasty. It was so relaxing watching the waves, chilling out. Summercombe has been the best holiday cottage we have stayed in and will definitely return. The Gladstones - Yorkshire

Matthew G,

Can not recommend this place enough! Everything was perfect and to a high quality. Fresh eggs and we loved the ability to switch off and enjoy the gorgeous countryside

Mr G,

A super comfortable property. Ideal for those who like peace & quiet & to get away from things.

Mr D,

Summercombe is a beautifully appointed cottage in a very quiet rural location which benefits from distant sea views. Mortehoe, Woolacombe and Combe Martin are all within 15-20 minutes drive and Ilfracombe is only 10 minutes away. Ally and Steve, who live opposite, are very friendly and helpful hosts - nothing is too much trouble. You can walk across the fields from the cottage to join a bridleway which leads to Hele Mill and the beach. There was nothing not to like!

Mr J,

Beautiful cottage, decorated to high standard - think 'Grand Designs'. Spacious and comfortable, highly recommended.

Mrs S,

Summercoombe is a beautiful property in a lovely location. The hosts are on hand to offer any help they can but at the same time, give you complete privacy. Spacious and airy inside, and equipped to a really good standard. Lovely grounds outside with plenty of dog walking opportunities. Hope to return next year.

Mrs H,

Thank you for another fantastic week here at Summercombe. We fell in love with this cottage and location in July and are so pleased to have returned. The perfect spot for a relaxing time away! Thank you also for the welcome goodies and fresh eggs whcih we all enjoyed and thank you for introducing us to your lovely brood of chickens! We hope to return again next year.

The Hayes Family,

We had a wonderful week - wish we were staying longer! We'll remedy that on our next booking. Such a cosy cottage - well situated, perfect interior, love the location Well done for creating a home - from - home space. Our dog, Katy loved the walks + appreciated the treats left in the fabulous welcome basket. Love the eggs - thank you to Blue + Smokey. Ate too much food, drank too much wine - PERFECT Thanks Ally for all the good advice on day trips + walks. This was the perfect break See you soon Lots of Love Carrie, Andy +Katy dog ( who is fast asleep in front of the fire at the moment)

Past Customer,

The cottage is beautiful and had everything we needed and more. The bath was a god-send after a full day of walking. Lovely fresh eggs for breakfast. We tried axe throwing at Key Pitts, down the road, it was harder than we thought. We walked the coastal path from Ilfracombe to Lee Bay and the coastline was lovely along the way. Everything was spotlessly clean on arrival which was really reassuring given the current situation.

Past Customer,

Thank you for a wonderful break at Summercombe - or first as a family of three and we couldn't have hoped for a more relaxing and comfortable stay! absolutely love the creative style of the cottage, such a beautiful setting. Ally & Steve have been fabulous hosts - all the little touches of hospitality make all the difference; we have already been telling plenty of people back home about the cottage, and we ourselves will undoubtedly be back (perhaps a little earlier in the summer next time so we might get some sunshine :)

Past Customer,

We've had such a gorgeous stay at Summercombe. Three of us on three sofas - great ingredients for relaxation. The weather wasn't fabulous it must be said, but it was actually perfect for walking and we took full advantage of that. Valley of the Rocks was really stunning and the contorted oaks on the track between Countisbury and Watersmeet were beautiful. Thanks for the treats - delicious. Getting away has never felt so good, after weeks and months at home. What could be more liberating than this beautiful countryside with the sea twinkling on the horizon, birds chattering and this light, open house as our base. We will be back. Kate Wade & Oscar

Past Customer,

A wonderful place to make a base in North Devon, you have chosen well if you're reading this! Stunning walks - recommend Baggy Point for a leisurely two hour loop - fantastic views (don't go on a windy day!) or a for a more strenuous climb - Hele - Mortehoe - via Morte Point - Woolacombe - four hours but well worth it. Great venue, hosts, spot. ENJOY!

Mrs Ka W,

Thank you for such a beautiful home from home and all the thoughtful extra touches. We have had a relaxing week in Devon.

Mr G P,

Thank you for a lovely week here at Summercombe. What a beautiful holiday home you have created! Everything was perfect and we really appreciated the welcome box of delicious treats and the fresh eggs. We loved the area, particularly the walk on the bridle path to Hele Bay, Woolacombe beach and the Valley of Rocks. Overall a very relaxing week and we hope to be back in the future.

Mrs T H,

Thank you for a great holiday. We loved the cottage which has been renovated to a very high standard and as we run a holiday cottage ourselves, we know how much hard work is involved! We loved the area and had a great walk down to Ilfracombe on the bridleway, supper in the Thatched Inn and walked (much slower...) back up the hill. Other highlights were the Marwood Hill Gardens and coastal walks. Overall, a great stay!

Mr H P,

Well, without a doubt, this has been the loveliest week of 2020 so far - a wonderful holiday in this gorgeous setting after months of lockdown, so welcome and needed! We have loved staying in Summercombe - a beautiful and comfortable base for our North Devon break. Thankfully, the weather has been mostly kind to us (and we chose a good week, escaping the heatwave back at home!), so we spent several days at Woolacombe beach (large so good for social distancing) and also enjoyed fish and chips and watching people crab at Combe Martin. The kids had fun at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, and we had a lovely walk along the river to the pebbly beach at Heddon Valley. We'd love to stay longer. Thank you for the very-welcome pack, and the fresh eggs a lovely surprise! Summercombe has been one of the nicest holiday homes we've stayed in, and we'll be back!

Ms H H,

Thank you for a lovely holiday, cottage is fab, everything you could need and a warm welcome.

Mr I C,

Thank you for a lovely relaxing week at Summercombe. Everything has been perfect, what a beautiful holiday home you have created, Can't fault anything. The welcome box was brilliant together with the fresh eggs complete with layers name! Fabulous setting in the middle of green fields yet everything is on the doorstep for exploring both on foot and by car. We will be back!

Mrs S P,
